One of the great traditions of the Highland Golf Links Pro Am is the advice shared by our professionals — insights that help amateurs to sharpen their game while enjoying three of Scotland’s finest courses.
Alan Tait, one of Scotland’s most familiar PGA professionals, reminds players to club up. “Most amateurs never take enough club. The trouble is usually short of the green, not long. Commit to the shot, take more club, and you’ll be surprised how many better results you see.”
Nick Papadakes, Head Professional at Onwentsia Club near Chicago, highlights the importance of managing your game from the green backwards. “Seventy-five percent of your shots will take place within 100 yards of the green. Plan each hole accordingly, and don’t always reach for driver. Know your yardages and practise your short game.”
Graeme Robertson, last year’s joint winner, advises amateurs to think about positioning. “Angles matter. If a hole runs left, tee up on the right. Give yourself the best approach. And don’t be afraid to lay up — a smart par is often better than chasing a risky birdie.”
Taken together, the message is clear: play smarter, not harder. Think about club selection, yardage management, and positioning off the tee. Combined with solid short-game practice, these simple adjustments can help amateurs make the most of their time on three world-class courses.
